'Ymbelydredd' is Gwenno's first Welsh language EP in over a decade, having recently finished touring and recording with pop band The Pipettes who released two albums (‘We Are The Pipettes’, ‘Earth Vs The Pipettes’) to world-wide acclaim including a top ten album in Japan, two top forty hits in the UK and a top ten in the US billboard indies. Gwenno has also been touring with Australian duo Pnau (Empire of the Sun) over the past 12 months and now she returns to her Welsh roots in Cardiff, where it all began 12 years ago.
Written, produced and performed by Gwenno, this lo-fi pop offering is a beautiful collision of glamour and poverty which reflects daily life on the streets of Cardiff. 'Ymbelydredd' tells tales of collapsing ceilings, 50p dance lessons, using soap as toothpaste, daily walks past prostitutes, tacky local nightspots in both an affectionate and poignant look at growing up in Cardiff during the 80's and 90's. It echoes the sounds of early Madonna, St Etienne, TLC, Pulp, Datblygu, Llwybr Llaethog and the distant murmur of Acid House that were all playing in Gwenno’s ears as the family moved from rented flat to rented flat in the Riverside area.
This EP is her first solo material inspired by music that reflects real places and is Gwenno’s soundtrack to her own city and childhood.
